Becoming a single mother by choice is a journey rooted in love and the desire to parent. Embracing Transracial Adoption

Lynn decided in her mid-30s that she wanted to become a mother, even though she hadn’t found a partner to settle down with. Inspired by her work as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer in Nashville, she saw the need for supportive foster parents. Lynn began her journey as a foster parent in 2012 and received her first placement in 2013: two beautiful white siblings.

Despite initially assuming she would foster black children, Lynn embraced the role of a mother to these two little girls, irrespective of their race. In 2015, Lynn adopted the girls, solidifying her commitment to them. This marked the beginning of her experience as a black mother raising white children.

Challenges and Triumphs

Lynn faced many challenges, from navigating the complexities of the foster care system to dealing with societal judgments about transracial adoption. People often questioned her choice, but Lynn remained steadfast, knowing her love and care transcended racial boundaries. Each child brought unique needs and stories, and Lynn provided a warm, caring, and safe environment where they could flourish. The rewards of seeing her children smile and hearing them say, “I love you,” reaffirmed her decision every day.

Addressing Race and Privilege

Raising white children as a black mother, Lynn had to address issues of race and privilege. She ensured her children were aware of the privileges they had as white individuals and educated them about the different experiences of black people in America. This included discussing significant events, like the deaths of George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbury, and participating in activities that highlighted racial justice, such as supporting Black Lives Matter.
