Black Single Mothers by Choice began as a place to tease apart the earliest and most tender stages of intentional motherhood and answer the questions we wrestle with most. The ones you ask quietly. The ones you Google at 2 a.m. Fertility choices. Donor selection. Medical advocacy. Dating, or not. And the reality of parenting very young children while holding everything together with hope, prayer, spreadsheets, caffeine and humor. Shaped by my identity as a Black woman, those conversations were rooted in survival, discovery, and a deep kind of courage. The kind you do not always recognize until you are already in it.
But motherhood does not stay still. Children grow, and so do we. What once felt urgent eventually becomes familiar. Capacity expands and shifts. Energy changes. And suddenly the questions are no longer just about getting through the day, but about how you want your life to feel on the other side of the early trenches. School-age parenting introduces a new set of considerations around identity, work, rest, boundaries, grief, joy, and how to live fully without constantly operating in crisis-management mode.
Somewhere between packing school snacks, attending school events, and reclaiming pieces of myself, it became clear that the story had expanded. The foundation was still there, intentional motherhood, honesty, and community, but the lens had widened. That evolution now lives under one home: Start to Finish Motherhood. It is the place where early decisions meet lived experience, and where the conversation grows alongside the children.
This is where Season 5, the Mash-Up episodes, comes in.
