OMG Twins!

I’m thrilled to share an incredible story—a story of resilience, determination, and the joy of expecting twins. Jamela, an inspiring soon-to-be mom of two was a guest on this season 3 podcast episode: What’s It Like to Find Out You’re Having Twins w/ Jamela, who takes us through her journey from divorce to the joyous moment when she discovered she was pregnant with twins. Jamila’s story is a testament to the power of community, self-advocacy, and unwavering faith.

A Journey Begins

Jamela’s journey to motherhood began after she filed for divorce at the age of 37. Depleted from the desire to get back into the dating world, Jamela decided to become a Single Mother by Choice (SMC), a decision supported by her mom. After deciding to move forward with her plan to become a parent, Jamela quickly realized that it wasn’t going to be an easy path. She opted to skip IUI and go directly to IVF due to limited resources and a clear vision of what she wanted—a baby girl. Despite the many challenges, including devastatingly low embryo counts and failed transfers, Jamela persevered.

The Battles and Triumphs

One of the key takeaways from Jamela’s story is her relentless advocacy for herself. After multiple challenges, she found it crucial to ask her physician critical questions and explore every possible avenue. Her advice to others following a similar path is clear: be action-oriented and advocate for yourself by investigating every test and procedure available to you.

The turning point in Jamela’s journey came when she sought care from a reproductive immunologist and hematologist. Despite initial resistance from her insurance company, Jamela’s determination paid off, and she finally found the right medical support for her unique case.

The Joy of Twins

After years of trying, Jamela received the news she’d been longing for: she was pregnant, and not just with one baby, but twins! The embryo split!  The initial beta test results were low, suggesting a singleton pregnancy, but the numbers skyrocketed in the follow-up test. When she went in for her six-week ultrasound, the doctor confirmed what she had a gut feeling about all along—there were two strong heartbeats.

Jamela’s excitement was tinged with financial and logistical concerns, but the overwhelming joy of expecting twins overshadowed everything else. She shared the news with her closest friends and prepared for the unexpected—but welcome—challenge of motherhood.

Jamela’s story doesn’t just end with her pregnancy; it’s also about the steps she took to prepare for the arrival of her twins. From enlisting the help of a tight-knit community to planning her postpartum care, Jamila emphasizes the importance of support. Her mom, an enthusiastic grandma-to-be, will be a cornerstone in her child-rearing team, showing just how vital a strong support system is.

Fashion and Cravings

Interestingly, Jamela didn’t experience the typical morning sickness often associated with pregnancy. Instead, her cravings leaned towards fresh fruits, particularly smoothies from Tropical Smoothie Café. Her pre-pregnancy passion for fashion also took center stage as she navigated the journey with style and grace, all while making room for the practicalities of motherhood.
