Growing up in a bustling family of 8 children, I cherished the adventures and boundless freedom that came with summer. The neighborhood served as our playground, and we created countless memories. Fast forward to today, and I find myself in a different era, raising my children as a Single Mother by Choice (SMC). While summer camp may be viewed as a privilege, it’s an essential part of my childcare plan, especially when school is out, and work still calls.
Summers as a single mother by choice can feel like a whirlwind. With the kids bursting with energy and the absence of school structure, it can get intense at times. However, it’s also one of the longest breaks you’ll get with your children, providing an opportunity to create lasting memories. It’s a time when you’re not bound by a school schedule, and you can fully engage with your kids without worrying about academic repercussions.
Preparing for Summer as a Single Mother by Choice
For those new to the SMC journey, summer preparation should ideally start as early as January. Summer camp, as I often joke to my friends, wants its payment upfront. The best choices and prices require early planning. For single parents like me, summer camp isn’t about giving our children a magical summer; it’s a necessity—a form of daycare for younger school-age children. And, let’s be honest, summer camp can be quite expensive. I typically explore programs offered through my county’s parks and recreation program, leverage our scout membership for camp options, and apply for financial aid when available. I also make sure to set aside a week or two for some “backyard camping” when my kids are home with me.
Each year, I make it a goal to take a family trip with my kids, providing much-needed unstructured bonding time. Planning this trip in January gives me ample time to save and budget for it. Contrary to what some may believe, a family vacation doesn’t have to break the bank. For the last three summers, my family has enjoyed a 4-hour drive to Ocean City, Maryland, for a budget-friendly getaway.
Winding Down Summer
Now that summer is over and the school year is in full swing, I’ve had the chance to reflect. Despite the intensity of this past summer, I cherished the quality time I spent with each of my kids. I allowed my 9-year-old to relax, read, and explore the backyard during a couple of weeks at home. We even ventured into the world of sleep-away camp, which turned out to be a hit. While my older child was away, I relished the one-on-one time with my 4-year-old, and it was truly wonderful. I also managed to have a few days to myself while the kids stayed with their godmother, and it was sheer bliss!
