Trauma is something that affects everyone, and as a black woman living in America, it can be particularly pervasive. Whether it’s the trauma of growing up in certain situations or just being a black person or a woman, there is likely some kind of trauma associated with it. This can be compounded if you are a Single Mother by Choice. Unfortunately, most of us haven’t had the space or the tools to fully process that trauma. This can lead to us believing that we are strong because we are strong or that we’ve had to be strong because our family structure was broken up, and we’ve had to make sure we were taking care of everyone.
In order to start healing from trauma, it’s important to first recognize that we have all been traumatized in some way. It’s also important to understand what our different triggers are and how we respond to them. For example, abandonment is a common trigger for many people, and it can cause them to become clingy or morph into someone they’re not in order to keep someone from leaving them. This fear of abandonment, if unaddressed, can impact how we parent as Single Mothers by Choice.
Once you’ve recognized your triggers and how you respond to them, it’s important to check in with yourself regularly to see how you’re feeling. This can involve cultivating a safe space with a therapist, coach, or friend who knows how to hold space for you without trying to fix things. It’s also important to learn how to communicate your needs effectively so that others know how to support you.
One way to start healing from trauma is to find your voice and learn how to express yourself in a constructive way. This can involve journaling, talking to a therapist, or finding a supportive community that understands what you’re going through. It’s also important to take care of your physical and emotional health by getting enough sleep, eating well, and practicing self-care.
If you’re struggling with trauma, it’s important to know that you’re not alone. There are many resources available to help you, including therapy, support groups, and online communities. By taking the time to focus on your healing, you can start to release the pain and move forward in your life.
At Start to Finish Motherhood, we believe that every mother deserves to feel supported and empowered on her journey, especially for those people thinking, pregnant, or already parenting as Single Mothers by Choice. That’s why we offer a monthly newsletter, journal, and a supportive community of like-minded women who are all working towards healing and growth. By subscribing to our newsletter and becoming a member of our community, you’ll gain access to resources and tools that can help you on your healing journey. We believe that by coming together and sharing our stories, we can create a more supportive and compassionate world for all mothers. Once you support moms you also support their child(ren).
