For years, I had the dream of having a lush and vibrant garden of my own. When I finally got the opportunity to make that dream come true when I purchased a new house, I was thrilled! For me, gardening isn’t just about growing flowers and vegetables – it’s about learning more about our ecosystem, living an environmentally friendly lifestyle by recycling my organic compost, and overall deepening my knowledge in this field. Very often, gardens are described as tranquil places with peace and serenity offering the perfect place to relax after a long day. For me, it has been so much more than just having a lovely space in which to rest. It has also brought joy into my life through months of hard work combined with nurturing love seeing everything coming together beautifully as if they are working together in harmony.
When I first had the idea to build a container garden in my backyard, I was filled with excitement. I dreamt of juicy tomatoes, flavorful herbs, and vibrant flowers that would bring life to our otherwise shady backyard. Little did I know that this project would take me and my family on an adventure!
Designing & Building Together
The months leading up to the project involved lots of research and planning. We studied the layout of our backyard for weeks, searching for the sunniest spot possible. Once we found it, we began gathering supplies together as a family – soil, tools, plants, and more. With everyone’s skillsets and ideas incorporated into the design process, we brought our vision to life in no time! To make things extra fun, we included creative touches like painting pots and adding decorations that reflected each family member’s style.
Challenges of Gardening in the Shade
Although our chosen spot seemed sunny enough at first glance, there were unforeseen challenges that came with gardening in mostly shade. We quickly learned how to adjust to unfavorable weather conditions like unexpected rain or extreme heat waves. We also had to figure out ways to maximize sunlight exposure for our plants by carefully selecting which ones can thrive in low-light areas (it was harder than you’d think!). Ultimately, all these struggles made us realize just how important it is to pick the right spot when building a garden – especially one in the shade!
Reflection & Goals for Next Year
Looking back on our experience with building a container garden in the shade has taught us so much about ourselves as individuals and as a family. Despite all the struggles along the way, we have so much appreciation for all the time spent creating something together as a family. And while this year’s vegetable production wasn’t quite what we expected, it has not deterred us from looking forward with optimism towards next year’s harvest season! We plan on setting higher goals for ourselves and are looking forward to even more enjoyment & fulfillment from this hobby.
Building a container garden this past summer has been one of my favorite projects yet! Not only did it provide valuable lessons about gardening in challenging environments but most importantly it gave me memories that will last forever with my loved ones. From researching ideal spots to maximize sunlight exposure for plants despite being mostly shaded; adjusting plans due to unpredictable weather conditions, and understanding what type of maintenance works best for each plant species – all these lessons have proven invaluable going forward into future gardening endeavors with my family! Now more than ever I understand why gardening is such an enjoyable hobby —it truly is an adventure worth embarking on with your loved ones!
